Description
Abbeyfield Park Gardeners are a friendly group of local volunteers who garden in the park on Thursday mornings 10-12. Our aim is for the park to become more enjoyable for local people to use and to add plants and flowers that attract bees and wildlife. New volunteers welcome, particularly beginner gardeners.
The Abbeyfield Park Gardeners have had a busy summer. We have spent a considerable amount of time working on the two island beds near the Abbeyfield Road gate where we have sown a perennial wildflower meadow. We hope to grow a variety of wildflowers that will attract and provide food for local birds and insects.
We also organise an annual plant swop and cake stall in May and successful Saturday gardening volunteers days in March and September.
Currently we are planting daffodil bulbs. Over the winter we want to do some more work on the shrubberies, clearing them of litter, brambles etc. Then pruning the shrubs and mulching with woodchip. We plan to do some consultation and research about what new shrubs to put in which will make these areas more attractive in the longer term. Ideas and suggestions welcome.
In the longer term the woodland area behind the house also needs some work to encourage a greater variety of woodland plants and build a more permanent leaf moulding bay.
If you would like to join in please come along to one of our volunteer sessions on a Thursday morning.
